Battery Powered Vehicle Status

Battery Powered Vehicle Status

Battery powered vehicles (BEVs) ended the third quarter with year-over-year sales growth of 19%, essentially the same as last year.
Rather than being a breakout quarter, the focus at the end of the third quarter has been on Tesla’s inability to manufacture Model 3 vehicles.

Other items of interest at the end of the third quarter:

  • PHEVs had the largest YOY growth, 34%
  • BEV and PHEV sales, as a percentage of total light vehicle sales, remained at around 1%
  • September BEV sales of 13,421, were the highest of any single month since BEVs were introduced. December 2016, BEV sales were 13,077 vehicles

Overview of different types of electrified vehicles:

  • BEVs are vehicles powered entirely by battery power.
  • PHEVs use the battery to travel the first 35 miles, then switch to an internal combustion engine to extend its range.
  • HEVs are essentially battery-assisted vehicles that use the internal combustion engine to power the car. Batteries don’t provide the motive power for the vehicle.

While September sales were good, the third quarter was not the breakout quarter that had been anticipated.

Tesla’s problems may have accounted for the lack of a breakthrough.

Prophecies of doom for the automobile and oil industries are predicated on much larger BEV growth rates than has been seen thus far.

  1. Donn thanks for the update.
As far as I know they key technological problem remains unsolved, a viable battery with reasonable range which has been elusive for many decades despite enormous private and government spending. Maybe the laws of chemistry and Physics preclude such a battery..

The other major problem is the cost and time required to replace the existing vast refueling system provided by the fossil fuel supply system throughout the USA and other parts of the world. This was developed with private money not government money.

One wonders what the numbers would look like without taxpayer subsidies and government mandates.
